A Great Commission Resurgence is Needed

6:29 am in Evangelism by Justin

A Great Commission Resurgence is needed, because it’s not about pride, tradition, or politics.  It is about being obedient to the call of Jesus Christ.

It’s not about adding; it’s about multiplying.  Start new churches.

It’s not about more programs; it’s about spiritual growth.  Be purposeful in your plan.

It’s not about my way.  It’s about Christ’s command.  Go and make disciples.  Are you going?  I’m not talking about being busy.  Our church calendars our full with meeting, recitals, classes, training, and fellowship.  We have busy well covered.  Maybe to go as Christ demands mean we need to stop going. Let’s slow down and make sure that as we go, we go in the direction of following Christ and what He would have us to do.

When we go we must remember that Christ pointed us in a direction.  Go… and make disciples.  Step 1: Find someone who is not a disciple.  America is the a huge mission field.  Something is wrong when America’s population is up and baptisms are down.  The saved are acting like the lost, because we’ve lost our direction.  It’s not about us – we need to refocus.  Pastors, the people are taking their cues from you.  Don’t just tell them to be friendly, to invite people to church, and to shahre the gospel.  Model it.

Some of us can bring the lost into our church, but that only brings them closer to see us act horribly.  If you had a special guest coming into your home, what would you do?  You would get ready.  You’d prepare.  Yet every Sunday you can see that many of our churches do not have a Great Commission focus, because they have not spent time to prepare for our honored, lost guests.  I want you to imagine stepping onto another planet and meeting an alien culture.  They have their own language and don’t know what to do with you.  This is how many of our lost friends feel when they walk into our churches.  Discipleship must include teaching the Bible, but you can’t teach them the Bible if they never come back.  A Great Commission Resurgence is needed in our greeting strategy.

Once people feel welcome in our churches, will they see a clear path to coming to Christ and becoming a stronger disciple?  Or will they see a long list of programs, events, and obligations?  A path, including the one of discipleship, is little good if it is not clear.  Promote clear spiritual mile markers within your church.

Finally, we need a Great Commission Resurgence personally.  If we are to be any good to the lost, we need to remind ourselves daily of the price Jesus paid for us and to be discipled through God’s Word and His community.  The Great Commission requires a great committment to God, to others, and to service.  What is your answer is Him?
